The original fieldwork on which this book is based was carried out within the framework of the research project 'Women's Movements and Organizations in Historical Perspective' , which extended from December 1982 until December 1985 and was financed by the Directorate General of International Cooperation of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I am especially indebted to Pamela Pattynama for her inspiring friendship and commitment during our stay in Bukittinggi, Sumatera and to Dida Pattipilohi who assisted the fieldwork in various ways. In a later phase Maria Pakpaham helped me to sort out the enormous amount of documentation gathered during the research process.
